Baseball World Cup : Australia capitalized on four walks issued by Chinese Taipei starter Chen Wei Lin and maintained its lead thanks to a strong outing from its starting pitcher and its defense.
On Saturday, Australia stunned World No. 2 Chinese Taipei 3-0 in the Super Round of the IV WBSC U-23 Baseball World Cup with a solid effort on both the mound and on the field.
Neither the Chinese Taipei nor the Australians had very good hitting performances in the match, but that was okay since the outcome did not affect their overall tournament placing. It was the pitchers, however, who really earned Australia the win.
With four walks given up, Chen Wei Lin’s pitching performance dipped to the point that he was pulled after the first inning. As a result of Australia scoring twice without recording a hit, Chinese Taipei was compelled to throw the ball to Yan Fong Lai from their bullpen.
Between the sixth and seventh innings, Lai and Ding Hong Guo did not allow a hit while recording seven outs by strikeout.
