On Saturday, Venezuela defeated Puerto Rico 4-2 in the last game of the Placement Round at the IV WBSC U-23 Baseball World Cup. Kenedy Corona launched a single home run to deep left center to give Venezuela the early lead.
In the second inning, Venezuela took the lead for good when Carlos Mendoza walked, stole second and third, and scored on an error after earlier taking the lead on a home hit by Eduardo Corona.
In the third inning, Corona walked, advanced to third on an error, and scored on a double by Amador Arias to left center. Arias ended up scoring Venezuela’s fourth run.
In the eighth inning, Puerto Rico was in a strong position to win. Having walked two and allowing a single, Venezuela’s Michele Vassalotti, a reliever, was taken out of the game. Jose Guzman, who was given the ball by Venezuela, walked a batter and enabled them to reach base.
The opening run of the game was scored by Misael Gonzalez, and Glenn Santiago made it 4–2, but a double play allowed Venezuela to escape the jam.
