WORLD CUP NEWS | Cuba defeats South Africa 9–0, led by Yuri Fernandez and the rest of the Cuban team
WORLD CUP NEWS : Both Cuba and South Africa have completed their participation in the IV WBSC U-23 Baseball World Cup. South African pitcher Jaryd White delivered a no-hitter, while Cuba’s Yuri Fernandez was a key contributor to the victory.
Cuba’s run at the IV WBSC U-23 Baseball World Cup came to an end with a 9-0 win against South Africa on Saturday at Dou-Liou Stadium, thanks in large part to the hitting of Yuri Fernandez.
Cuba finished the Placement Round undefeated with a 3-0 record after beating Germany, Venezuela, and South Africa.
From the first whistle, both clubs showed incredible defensive effort. After being retired by a fly-out 4-6 double play by Cuba, South Africa promptly retired Cuba’s hitter with a 1-6-3 double play, and Cuba’s pitcher, Jaryd White, ended the inning with a strikeout.
In the bottom of the second inning, Cubans Carlos Monier and Yuri Fernandez scored after they both reached base through a single.
Fernandez contributed to three runs scored by collecting three hits. In the latter innings, Cuba jumped out to a 6-0 lead thanks to triples by Bryan Gonzalez and Christian Rodriguez and doubles by Dany Oramas, each of which plated two runs.
In the fifth inning, Fernandez hit another triple to right field, and he scored the game’s seventh run on a sacrifice fly by Gonzalez.
Cuba scored two more times in the ninth inning to increase their lead to 9–0. South African starter White tossed six innings of shutout ball, while relievers Oscar Hernandez and Alex Guerra struck out five in two scoreless innings of work.
